How to Stop OCD Thoughts
Lets pretend that you are in a middle of an important meeting at your work place. There are many important people who are waiting to listen to your business presentation. You have a reputation to uphold and you cannot afford to make any mistake in order to secure a large project for your company.
Suddenly a surge of overwhelming sensations starts to come and you suddenly feel disoriented and scared. You feel overwhelming fears and your body starts to feel numb and shaky. You feel that you are about to collapse or have a panic attack! If you are in this crucial situation, what will you do?
In this article, I will give you some very powerful tips to overcome panic attacks and stop them almost instantaneuosly. Here it goes:
When facing with this frightening situation, what you MUST do to overcome panic attacks is to let the feelings and sensations come. Yes! Don’t try to stop them because you can never win them that way. Just let it come to you as they may. In fact, you can even challenge them to come even harder! I know you might think that this may sound illogical and possibly harmful. But do you know what actually strengthen the panic attacks? It is your own excessive fears that will allow them to overpower you. The more you try to resist the feelings, the more it will come to attack you.
Think it this way: If you are confronted with a poisonous snake and you try to hit it or run away from it, what would you think that the venomous snake might do? Move away from you? No! If you make an abrupt move chances are very high that you will be bitten by it. On the othe hand if you just stood there in silence, the snake will more likely to go away. Although this analogy might not be the same with the scenario above but it has some very important similarities to panic attacks.
You see, all anxiety disorder symptoms has this same characteristics. The sensations and overwhelming fears will only escalate and get out of hand if you feed them with more fears, attention and resistance. It is the same with intrusive thoughts in OCD, the more you resist the thoughts the stronger it will be, the more you react with the urges to rid the thoughts the more it will haunt you. These are the reasons why many anxiety disorder sufferers are suffering from the symptoms at the first place, it is because they resist!
Remember, panic attacks are actually overwhelming sensations and feelings which are based on illussions, they are NOT factual fears or dangers. They are the products of the misfiring of the Amygdala. Notice in the example above, I used the word “sensations” and “feel” repeatedly. Yes, all anxiety disorder symptoms are just that, they are only sensations and feelings, NOT real.
